Professor Julian Crane is a research professor at the University of Otago in Wellington and head of its Wellington Asthma Research Group.

Prof. Crane's research interest is asthma and allergic disease and effects of the domestic environment on lung health. He is particularly interested to determine the effects of housing on the respiratory health of the occupants. In addition, he carries out research on the effects of probiotics on allergy prevention and novel smoking cessation treatments.

Julian is a physician by training and has published a number of research papers which he has presented to the building industry, including at BRANZ events. He will discuss the various effects of the home environment on the airway – specifically allergens and mould as well as asthma and allergic disease - what is known and not known and what can and cannot be done by way of improvements.
